Team Frugal: Steve Nash

Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.

When you are passionate about something it’s best to get with like-minded individuals or people in that particular sector. You are able to bounce ideas and seek information that will help you reach your ambitions. Whether it’s joining a team to get that championship or doing an externship with a mentor to get yourself further ahead, seeking knowledge from more experienced platforms can get you over the edge.

Steve Nash just as he was able to read schemes and defensive sets using his vision on thecourt has translated his vision off the court to help propel a successful portfolio outside of his storied basketball career.

Through his investment portfolio, Steve Nash is involved in a plethora of companies in the tech, nutrition, sports, and marketing fields. Steve Nash is most notably an owner with two soccer clubs (Vancouver Whitecaps &  Real Mallorca) and marketing ad agency, Consigliere Brand Capital which stemmed off the back of an unpaid internship he did with one of Deutsch’s executives.

Steve Nash is a great example of an athlete who was able to get involved in his passions off the court through great foresight and sound judgement. His passions for soccer and marketing extend from his multicultural upbringing. By being smart with his money and connecting with the right people through networking and internships he was able to immerse himself deeply in some of his passions.

As athletes we are all interested in other things off the court. However, sometimes we rush to judgment in getting involved in those areas without the expertise. Whether it’s opening a car dealership because of my love for cars or starting a restaurant because of my affinity for food, we should heed Steve Nash’s footprints in doing our due diligence before getting involved in outside ventures especially when we are passionate about it.
