Team Frugal: Scott Caldwell
Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.
Not a lot of athletes are fortunate enough to know what they want to do immediately after they retire, let alone while they are playing. Scott Caldwell is not one of those athletes. He’s made it imperative to plan ahead from the very beginning of his career. As a result of his proactive approach he’s been able to take part in other passions and projects on top of his career.
Caldwell already is a qualified CPA. Although he still needs the required work hours and experience, he has passed the necessary certifications to be labeled as a CPA. He is also on the MLSPA executive board and active in his hometown community.
Not every athlete will know exactly what they want to do after their career is over and that’s alright. What we can take away from Scott Caldwell, is his curiosity in finding what he wanted to possibly due and be proactive in taking the active steps to do it. As a professional athlete you have more free time than you thing especially compared to individuals that have to take care of their families and work the 9-5. By being proactive you will not only find out what you may like but what you don’t like. This will help just as much if not more when it comes time to figuring out what you want to do after your career is over.
