Team Frugal: Derek Jeter
Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.
No one can tell your story like you can. As an athlete being able to brand yourself and engage with your fans and audience can be done straight from your phone. You don’t have to be the star player of the team or best public speaker to share your story.
Derek Jeter created a platform for athletes to tell their story with The Players Tribune. With their recent news of expansion into Europe, it was time we highlighted Derek Jeter as a frugal athlete.
The Players Tribune according to their website is "a new media company that provides athletes with a platform to connect directly with their fans, in their own words. Founded by Derek Jeter, The Players’ Tribune publishes first-person stories from athletes, providing unique insight into the daily sports conversation. Through impactful and powerful long- and short-form stories, video series and podcasts, The Players’ Tribune brings fans closer than ever to the games they love."
This is great because it doesn’t allow words to get misinterpreted between messengers and builds trust between player and audience.
Derek Jeter is arguably one of the greatest baseball players if not athletes of all time. He is a New York Yankee legend and for sure future Hall of Famer when it comes time to be inducted. What’s great about Derek Jeter, is that although he made more than enough during his playing career, he was always looking bigger picture. Derek Jeter saw a niche with The Players Tribune and decided to fill it.
Derek Jeter’s business portfolio includes numerous endorsement deals and investments most notably Whistle Sports and STOPit. He also is an owner for the Miami Marlins baseball team. His Turn 2 foundation which promotes healthy lifestyles is ran by his sister is a great example of an athlete using his resources to build for his family.
Derek Jeter is famous for saying upon his retirement that, “I’m an old man in baseball but a young man in life." This is great advice for all athletes. Just because your career is over doesn’t mean your life is. That is why it’s important to be frugal both with your finances and career decisions.
