Team Frugal: Kirk Cousins

Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.

"You don't know how long you're going to play, you've got to save every dollar even though you are making a good salary," I wouldn’t have guessed Kirk Cousins, who’s currently in the middle of an NFL bidding war and will change the landscape of pay for the current NFL QB’s as we know it, to be the one saying this.

When you realize how frugal Kirk Cousins is, the quote doesn't come as too much of a surprise. Cousins still drives an old passenger van that he got from his grandparents, lives in his parents basement during the summer offseason, and before he married his wife was living with a fellow teammate as a roommate.

You can see why we are highlighting him as this weeks team frugal edition.

Kirk Cousins is already a bona fide multi millionaire after breaking through as the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins. Now he’s due for an even bigger pay day and it doesn’t seem as if his frugal tendencies are going to go away.

If someone like Kirk Cousins can understand the importance of saving and being prudent, anyone can follow his mentality. You don't have to be hoarder with your money but you have to make sure your spending habits are controlled. It’s important to know that in order to build true financial freedom one of the key ways is  keeping your expenses lower than your income. Cousins could easily start spending money once he gets his pay raise but he understands how quick it could all go away. So why not be frugal and strategically spend.
