Team Frugal: Paul Rabil
Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.
Lacrosse may not be a major sport but odds are you have heard about Paul Rabil. Rabil has made the right moves off the field to help him make lacrosse, a full time career.
In a sport where the average salary is less than 40,000 dollars a year a lot of lacrosse players have other full time professions. Rabil, due to a combination of his content creation and business insights as well as his talent has leveraged his status as a top lacrosse player to connect with a multitude of different companies and brands for different endorsements and partnership investments. Brands such as Red Bull, Go Pro, and New Balance eagerly work with Rabil for his impact. In fact, to show how valuable Paul Rabil has made himself, it was announced as the first official Million Dollar Man in Lacrosse, and it wasn't due to his actual playing salary.
Upon graduating from the prestigious John Hopkins University, Paul Rabil spent almost a year at a real estate investment firm which he credits as a key to his entrepreneurial spirit. Rabil has carried this spirit to other platforms such as his own personal youtube channel and podcast. Amongst his business portfolio he has stakes in Whistle Sports, The Athletic, and Brandless to name a few.
It is important to understand that not only is every sport different but every athlete is different when it comes to their pay scale and niche. However, how you manage your time and relationships off the field can change it all for the better. Like Paul did, you can make your own niche and create other streams of income just by using your connections and status as an athlete. Also by working hard and taking advantage of the platform you have while you have it.
Rabil has given the blueprint for other athletes that may be in smaller sports or even sports markets and for that reason he is our team frugal athlete of the week.
