Cheap or Frugal

Why it's Time to stop confusing being Frugal for being Cheap

When people think of frugal they automatically assume cheap. I’m here to tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being frugal is looked down upon for some reason especially as a professional athlete. When you are suppose to carry yourself a certain way and have certain things that fit the pre determined athlete persona it’s difficult to be frugal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being frugal. Would you rather have flash with no substance or substance with some flash, that’s basically what being frugal is all about.

Cheap by definition is low in price, of little worth where as Frugal means sparing or economical

The best way I can describe the difference is say you are shopping for some plain white T-shirts. A cheap person just gets the cheapest one irrespective of substance or anything where a frugal person will look at quality and may end up getting a 2 for 1 sale instead of just the cheapest price. Not only will the frugal person get a better quality T-shirt they will also get more for their dollar at the same time.

When you think about it, it’s expensive to be cheap. If I’m always buying cheap things and not getting quality for my purchases I’m either going to be unsatisfied or going to have to quickly replenish whatever I bought again. If I buy cheap clothes and they shrink after I put them in the dryer guess what, I got to buy more clothes.

That is why we preach frugal. Being frugal is not only economical but strategic in your financial and career decisions. As an athlete at any level it’s only right to be frugal because you are thinking long term. So the next time someone claims you are cheap, just respond back with NO I’m Frugal
