Team Frugal: Romelu Lukaku

Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.

Romelu Lukaku has been one of the top players  in the World Cup right now as the star forward for favorites, Belgium. He’s second on the golden boot list and if he recovers from his injury he may end up taking the golden boot.

Romelu Lukaku is one of the highest paid players for Manchester United, he has one of the best agents in the world in Mino Raiola, and he continues to break goal scoring records on a yearly basis.

“Choosing on an exclusive sportswear brand to work with is an important decision, not just for the boots on the pitch but for my goals and desires off of it,” Lukaku said in a statement released by Puma. “I look forward to hustling with the big cat in the future.”

Why we chose to highlight Lukaku as a frugal athlete for  team frugal is partly because of what he’s done to get through the adversity he’s dealt with and his ability to go against the grain.

Lukaku was the first player from the English Premier League to join American based agency Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s sports firm. Lukaku instead of signing with the big dogs like Nike or Adidas he chose to sign with Puma. These moves may not seem big but it’s a great example of player going against the grain and use his platform to reach a larger demographic and open up more streams of income and possibilities. Yes, Lukaku is a big time player if you are a soccer fan but he’s not a global icon like Messi, Ronaldo, Pogba, or Neymar by making strategic moves like he has, he’s created an opportunity for himself to create a larger platform with his name and profession.
