Take Advantage Of Your Free Time
As professional athletes you have the best job in the world. You get paid to essentially work out and play a sport you love. Yes, you can’t underestimate the amount of work and sacrifice it takes to be able to make it to professional sports but it’s important to reflect on what a blessing it is to have practice count as work and game days count as meetings/projects.
As athletes in most cases, practice only takes up about 4-5 hours of your day. With off days sprinkled in throughout the week, you have a lot of free time on your hands. What you do with your free time can make all the difference in your career both on and off the field. Whether you want to spend time binging the latest Netflix series or playing video games or working on your craft or building for your future, that is solely up to you.
This is not to say don’t rest and enjoy your downtime as an athlete because you have to take care of your body first and foremost. This is a call to action in hopes for you to realize that wonderful opportunity and concept of time that you have at your disposal. What are some ways you can take advantage of your free time? It doesn’t even have to be a big task.
Try something as simple as this:
You usually get at least one off day per week in order to recover and relax throughout the taxing season. Set up a breakfast or lunch meeting with someone you would like to connect with. This won’t take more than two hours out of your day and you will greatly benefit from this. Not only are you increasing your network, you are showing interest in someone or something else that can come back and help you in the future, you are increasing your knowledge in a particular topic, you are building your name amongst a larger community, you are taking your mind off the game and giving yourself other passions to grow in, etc. The benefits are endless compared to different alternatives.
When you are done playing, you are going to wish you had all this free time back. Take advantage of it now!
