Frugal Lessons From Ballers: Season 4 Episode 4

Ballers is a HBO series show about a former football player turned financial manager (a character named Spencer, played by The Rock) that highlights the life of current and former players in regards to sports and finances and how they balance it all together.  Ballers goes in depth on a number of topics involving the lifestyle of professional athletes from players transitioning post career to handling family and friends to dealing with negotiations.


The following highlights different key financial points from the show that athletes deal with or can learn from.

Ricky is still undecided whether he wants to unretire and get back to playing. He seeks the advice of Randy Courture, a UFC fighter who's come out of retirement multiple times during a boxing session with him. Courture says he won't know if he's ready until he gets punched in the face.

Ricky is at a crossroads with his retirement. It seems like part of him wants to continue playing and part of him wants to retire. Ballers does a great job subtly showing the transition struggles athletes have through Ricky's predicament. 

Ricky can obviously still play at a high level and whether he wants to play or not is solely on him but his lack of preparation and identity outside of football has left him idle through his retirement which has led to his wanting to get back on the field.  


Protect Your Investments

Terell Suggs notifies Spencer that he is not happy with how things are going with their business ventures so far in SportsX. He is so unhappy that he seeks to get out of the deal that he had with Spencer in order to protect his investments. 

Ballers gives a great example of an athlete that is involved in his financial portfolio and decisions. It's vital that athletes are involved and monitoring what's going on with their finances because at the end of the day, it's their money. 

The most important thing especially when you have a good foundation is to protect your investments, which is what Suggs is doing. He doesn't make no qualms about his decision, he is firm and proactive.
