Team Frugal: Caron Butler

Being frugal is about more than being stingy with your money. It means being prudent, smart and economical with your finances and career decisions. Every Tuesday, we share profiles of athletes that exemplify what it means to be A Frugal Athlete.

Caron Butler is not only a sports analyst but investor and entrepreneur as well. If you knew his story, you wouldn’t fathom Butler’s journey. He grew up in the rough neighborhood of Racine, Washington and was able to leave the drug game to eventually carve out a very successful NBA career. 13 years, 1 championship, and 2 all star appearances to his name, he was able to catapult his career into a plethora of other opportunities for his post career.

Caron Butler could have been like over half of the professional athletes who succumb to financial troubles after his career was over. Given Butler’s history and upbringing, one could conclude he may have been on the same path of many athletes that struggle with financial money management. Butler was able to use his experience on the streets and apply it to his NBA career. He started thinking long term and changing his lifestyle to partake in things that he showed interests in. Continuing his education by partaking in the broadcasting program, business program, etc supplied by the NBA and NBAPA. Finding business role models whether it was Magic Johnson or Mark Cuban during his time playing with the Dallas Mavericks. Diversifying his revenue sources to create more financial stability.

Caron Butler is a great example of an athlete that didn’t let his environment take control of his future. He used sports and all of its resources instead of letting sports use him.
