Protect The Merchandise

Protect The Merchandise

I was recently watching Hard Knocks HBO and it reminded the cardinal rule of football practice.

DON’T HIT THE QUARTERBACK….

Head Coach, Jon Gruden was adamant about protecting the merchandise and not hitting the quarterback. He pleaded with his coaching staff and berated his players, that we have to protect the merchandise. Although this concept doesn’t directly translate to the money management and finances, I think we can apply the rule of protecting your most valuable asset to help us become more frugal.

One idea could be to create a separate account that you continually contribute funds to that you don’t touch. There are many different avenues to create something like this. Whether it’s using your 401k contributions or opening a separate savings account or CD. Creating a safety account that you can’t touch where you essentially don’t hit the quarterback allows you to always know you have a clear opportunity to build a strong financial base.
